Cash Flow Is Oxygen

“Profit looks good on paper. Cash flow determines whether your

business can breathe.”

O

ne of the greatest financial lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur is this: The best time to prepare for a financial storm is when the sun is shining.

Over the years, I’ve owned businesses through economic uncertainty, changing markets, labor shortages, rising material costs, and unexpected disruptions. Each one reinforced the same lesson.

Strong companies don’t survive because they hope tomorrow will be better. They survive because they prepared for tomorrow while business was still good.

Early in my career, I thought profit was the ultimate measure of success. It wasn’t long before I realized that profit and cash are two very different things.

A company can report an excellent profit and still struggle to meet payroll. It can have record sales and still find itself short of cash.

That’s because profit is an accounting result. Cash flow is operational reality.

I’ve often compared cash flow to oxygen. You don’t think much about oxygen until you can’t breathe.

The same is true in business.

When cash is strong, leaders think about opportunity. When cash becomes tight, every decision becomes defensive.

I’ve never wanted to lead from a position of desperation. Instead, I’ve tried to build businesses with enough working capital to make decisions from a position of strength.

Strength creates options.

Options create opportunity.

And opportunity creates long-term success.

One philosophy has guided me throughout my entrepreneurial journey:

Prepare for the events of tomorrow today.

That means forecasting cash before it’s needed. Building reserves before they’re required. Protecting working capital before the market changes.

Because markets always change. The economy moves in cycles. Unexpected events happen. Every business will eventually face a difficult season.

The question isn’t whether it will happen. The question is whether you’ll be ready when it does.

I’ve always believed cash reserves aren’t idle money.

They’re strategic assets.

They provide confidence when others become fearful.

They allow you to continue investing when competitors are cutting back.

They give you the freedom to make decisions based on long-term opportunity rather than short-term survival.

One of the disciplines that has served me well is maintaining a rolling cash flow forecast. Not because I enjoy spreadsheets.

Because I dislike surprises.

A cash flow forecast isn’t about predicting the future perfectly.

It’s about seeing far enough ahead that you can influence the outcome before it arrives.

The strongest businesses aren’t always the fastest growing. They’re the ones that are financially prepared for both opportunity and adversity.

When others are reacting…

They’re already executing a plan.

That’s the power of disciplined cash management.

Revenue creates excitement.

Profit creates confidence.

Cash creates survival.

From My Desk

Looking back, I don’t think the healthiest companies I’ve built were successful because we generated the highest profits. They were successful because we remained financially disciplined when times were good.

We made decisions that strengthened our working capital, built cash reserves, and prepared for the unexpected. Those decisions gave us confidence during difficult times and flexibility when opportunities appeared.

’ve learned that financial freedom in business isn’t measured by the size of your income statement. It’s measured by the strength of your balance sheet and the confidence that comes from knowing you’re prepared for tomorrow.

Builder’s Challenge

This week, ask yourself three questions:

If revenue declined by 20% over the next six months, would my business remain strong?

Do I have a rolling cash flow forecast that extends at least 90 days into the future?

Am I building cash reserves during prosperous times, or simply assuming they will continue?

Don’t wait for uncertainty to expose weaknesses. Use today’s success to prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.

The strongest companies aren’t built during the storm. They’re built long before the storm arrives.
